Causes

Why Concrete Fails

Concrete is pretty amazing stuff. It can be poured, shaped and made into just about anything you like. But even though it’s incredibly strong, it’s not indestructible. So, when you see cracked concrete or a driveway or patio that has sunken or broken slabs or is pitted, flaked and stained, there are reasons why these things happen.

The good news is with the right materials, equipment, and help from the experienced professionals at Sentry Concrete Solutions, concrete damage can be repaired. Call us today at 1-431-733-3996 or click below to get a free concrete repair estimate in Winnipeg, Winkler, Altona and the nearby areas.

What Lies Beneath

Poorly compacted soil

When your home was built, the movement of soil around the building site results in poor compaction. Even when the replaced soil is compacted well, it’s never as stable as the original soil. Over time, this can cause voids to form and slabs to settle.

Dry soil

Another cause of soil failure is drought. During dry conditions or even just during periods of warm weather and low precipitation, the soil under your concrete will dry out and shrink, creating voids. The concrete above eventually cracks and sinks into these empty spaces; especially if any weight is placed on it.

Flooding

When the rains return, the water has an even easier pathway under the slab due to cracks and crevices left over from the dry period. And this wet, soft soil is just too weak to support the concrete above it. In the worst case, the soil erodes and washes away completely, leaving behind large voids that cannot support the weight of the concrete above.

Pitting, Flaking and Staining

Moisture is concrete’s strongest enemy. It seeps into the pores of untreated concrete, and when temperatures drop, especially during freeze-thaw cycles, that trapped moisture expands as it turns to ice. This expansion destroys the pores and weakens the concrete. This results in concrete slabs that can pit and flake. Concrete’s porous nature also makes it susceptible to staining when left untreated.

Street Creep

As a homeowner, you don’t just have to worry about your own concrete slabs; you should be concerned with the slabs that make up the street that goes past your house.

During colder months, your street’s slabs contract, opening up the joints between them. Those joints then become filled with pebbles and other debris. Then, when the warm weather returns, the slabs expand again – only the joints that were designed to absorb this expansion are now filled with material that won’t compress. This leaves the expansion pressure nowhere to go except up your driveway. This “street creep,” as it is known, exerts incredible pressure on your home and can cause all sorts of problems.

Street Creep

Whatever the cause of your concrete problem, we have an effective solution. Sentry Concrete Solutions offers concrete repair for settlement, sinking, and cracks. We will assess your property and recommend the best solution for your driveway, patio, or any concrete slab that needs repair. Call us today at 1-431-733-3996 or contact us online for a free estimate in Winnipeg, Winkler, Altona, Balmoral, Brandon, Marquette, Lockport, Carman, Saint Claude, Morris and the nearby areas.

Cracked Concrete

Cracked Concrete Repair in All of Southeastern Manitoba

Cracked concrete happens when part of a concrete slab breaks and sinks into underlying soil that has compressed or washed away. These cracks aren’t just unsightly; they offer moisture a way to seep beneath the slab. This can cause the underlying soil to soften or even wash away completely. That in turn can cause the slab to crack further as it sinks into the void left by the washed-away soil.

To prevent moisture from seeping into the soil beneath, those cracks need to be sealed, as do the control joints that were cut between the slabs when they were first poured. While you could seal them with urethane caulk found at your local big-box DIY store, that is a solution that is prone to cracking, bubbling and drying out over time. Which means you’ll likely be sealing them again… and sooner than you thought.

To request a free cost estimate to repair your cracked concrete slab, call us today at 1-431-733-3996 or click below to schedule an on-site inspection in Winnipeg, Winkler, Altona and nearby areas!

The NexusPro Solution

Thankfully, fixing cracks in concrete has never been easier, thanks to a breakthrough in technology only available from Sentry Concrete Solutions and other concrete repair contractors in the Supportworks network.

NexusPro is a silicone-based sealant for joints and cracks specially formulated to provide long-lasting flexibility and to stand up to harsh weather conditions. Unlike traditional polyurethane sealants, NexusPro resists UV rays, which means it won’t crack, bubble or dry out. That means a single application can seal the joints and cracks in your concrete driveway, patio, pool deck or sidewalk for years to come, protecting it from damage caused by soil compaction and washout.

Quick to Install, Quick to Cure

The NexusPro solution is installed by a highly trained crew that specializes in concrete repair and protection. Finally, the cracks are detailed with a thin layer of native sand, giving the concrete a uniform, finished appearance. And, of course, sealed concrete cracks mean no unsightly weeds growing through.

Sidewalk Repair

Concrete Sidewalk Repair & Leveling in All of Southeastern Manitoba

If you have a concrete sidewalk that is cracked or uneven, it not only looks bad, but it can lead to a fall or serious injury. The good news is the concrete does not have to be torn out and poured again to fix the problem. Sentry Concrete Solutions can raise your sinking sidewalk and prevent it from sinking further. With PolyLevel® concrete lifting, we can make your sidewalk level again in just 15 minutes!

If you have a sunken walkway or sidewalk, contact us today to request a free estimate for concrete leveling in Winnipeg, Winkler, Altona or nearby.

Why concrete walkways sink and crack

Walkways and sidewalks are exposed to a lot of wear and tear. When the soil supporting the concrete becomes weak, the concrete can crack and sink. There are many things that can create a void beneath the slab, such as erosion from rainwater or gutter runoff, or a tree root that has rotted over time. Dirt fill underneath the slab that has not been well compacted can also create voids beneath the concrete. Regardless of what’s caused your sidewalk to sink, we can fix it!

Before and after: Concrete sidewalk leveling

Look familiar? The sidewalk in front of this home settled a couple of inches, creating a trip hazard and an area for water to pool. After raising the slab with PolyLevel®, we were able to turn the sunken sidewalk into a safe, level surface.

Restoring the walkway with concrete leveling

Some areas require home and business owners to maintain the sidewalks adjoining their property. If someone trips and falls on the sidewalk in front of your home, you might be liable. It’s important to check your town or city’s sidewalk regulations.

Concrete lifting with PolyLevel® is a practical, affordable solution for concrete sidewalk repair. In addition to taking less time and costing you less, concrete leveling is far less disruptive to the landscaping. If the concrete is ripped out and repoured, the grass can be damaged from the heavy equipment and the removal of the old slab. With PolyLevel® injection lifting, there’s almost no waiting for the concrete to cure before you can walk on it. With concrete replacement, it usually takes about a day for the concrete to cure.

Concrete Driveway Repair

Concrete Driveway Repair & Leveling in All of Southeastern Manitoba

Do you have a concrete driveway that’s cracked, sunken and uneven? Sentry Concrete Solutions can quickly and effectively repair your driveway by leveling the concrete, rather than tearing out and replacing it. At Sentry Concrete Solutions we use a process called PolyLevel® to raise the existing concrete slab back to its original position.

If you have an uneven driveway that you need repaired, contact us today. We offer free estimates for concrete leveling in Winnipeg, Winkler, Altona and nearby.

What causes concrete driveways to sink?

Erosion is a common cause of sunken concrete. Erosion washes away soil from under your driveway, creating a void or space under the concrete slab. Your driveway can begin to sink in areas where the soil has been washed out. Clogged gutters, downspouts that are not installed correctly, and poor yard drainage can make erosion worse. A heavy load, such as an RV that’s kept in your driveway, can cause sections of the driveway to sink and crack over time. If you have a newer home with a sinking driveway, it could be because the ground around the house is settling or the base of the driveway was not compacted properly. A sinking driveway near your garage can lead to foundation cracks and expensive damage over time.

Before and after: Driveway leveling

This concrete driveway had sunk about two inches in front of the garage. Using PolyLevel®, we were able to raise the concrete, making the driveway level with the garage entrance. No more ugly sunken driveway!

We can raise your uneven concrete driveway

While surface problems can likely be patched, this won’t fix the underlying settlement problem and more cracks can form in your driveway. Although do-it-yourself repairs might be less expensive, they can be messy, require special tools and equipment, and it can be as long as 30 days before you’re able to use your driveway again. No matter what’s causing your driveway to sink, we can fix the problem fast and prevent further sinking with our concrete repair services.

PolyLevel® is a fast, effective option for repairing your sunken concrete driveway. First, your contractor will drill small holes in the slab. Then they will inject a high-density polyurethane through the holes. The polymer will spread beneath the slab and lift it up. Finally, the holes are patched and the cracks are filled. You’ll be able to use your driveway within one day.

Pool Deck Repair

Quickly repair uneven concrete around your pool with PolyLevel®

Has the concrete surrounding your pool dipped or settled, creating a hazardous uneven surface? Is there a protruding concrete edge where one section of the slab has settled below another?

The foundation repair specialists at Sentry Concrete Solutions are especially well-equipped to make these types of pool deck repairs.

What’s more, our innovative PolyLevel® concrete lifting and leveling technique is faster and more affordable than pool deck replacement. It’s also a better option than pool deck resurfacing.

Contact Sentry Concrete Solutions to have your pool deck inspected today! We serve Winnipeg, Winkler, Altona and neighboring areas throughout Manitoba. Get a free estimate for pool deck lifting and repair.

Causes of a sinking concrete pool deck

Many concrete pool decks are prone to settling because of the pool construction process. The backfill soil that’s added around the pool excavation will not be as dense or well-compacted as the undisturbed soil. When a heavy concrete slab is poured around the pool, loose soil will often compress under the slab’s weight, causing sections of the concrete to sink or settle

Concrete pool deck restoration with PolyLevel®

Some contractors still use the old-school repair for settled concrete. They use heavy equipment to demolish the cracked, settled sections of concrete around your swimming pool, and pour a new concrete deck. With concrete replacement, you often get a damaged yard and a pool that’s off limits until the new concrete hardens and cures. Our concrete leveling method saves you time and money, and won’t disrupt your landscaping.

Injecting PolyLevel expanding foam beneath a settled pool deck will raise the concrete back to the proper level and also strengthen the soil so that the problem won’t recur.

How PolyLevel® works to repair your settled pool deck

PolyLevel is a high-density expanding foam that our technicians can use to raise settled concrete. The two-part polyurethane foam mixture is injected through small holes drilled in the settled concrete. Our installers are trained to control the injection process so that just enough foam is used to re-level the concrete deck. Because the foam’s expanding action fills voids in loose soil, this concrete leveling technique improves the soil’s stability and load-bearing characteristics. You can feel confident that settlement won’t occur again.

PolyLevel® vs. Mudjacking

Mud Jacking vs. PolyLevel® in Winnipeg & Surrounding Areas

A lightweight, more precise method to lifting sunken concrete slabs

Sinking patios, walkways, driveways, and concrete steps are unsightly and can create a tripping hazard on your property. One method for repairing sinking and settling concrete slabs is traditional mud jacking.

What is mud jacking? Mud jacking is also known as slab jacking and grout pumping. It’s a repair technique for lifting concrete slabs with a mortar-based mix. Mud jacking involves pumping a mixture of water, soil, sand and Portland cement under a settling concrete slab. The material, or “slurry”, cures to become a solid, stable fill to lift sunken concrete.

The problems with mud jacking: Mud jacking may be widely used, but is it the best option for lifting those sunken concrete slabs? For heavy concrete structures, mud jacking is successful when used in conjunction with slab piers, not as a standalone solution.

For sunken concrete slabs, traditional mud jacking is messy, involves on-site mixing, drilling large holes, and takes hours or days to completely cure, leaving concrete unusable.

The PolyLevel® solution

Sentry Concrete Solutions offers a fast, effective, and less invasive approach to concrete leveling with PolyLevel®. The PolyLevel® system involves injecting an expanding polymer foam under the concrete for a durable, long-lasting solution. If you’re interested in learning about what PolyLevel® can do for you, call us for a free estimate for our alternative to mud jacking in Winnipeg, Winkler, Altona and nearby.

PolyLevel® concrete lifting & leveling advantages

The benefits of PolyLevel® injectable polymer when compared to traditional mud jacking:

Greater precision & accuracy

Metered, spaced-out injections ensure that the lifting power of PolyLevel® is carefully controlled. We can even adjust the chemical composition of our injection for further precision.

Environmentally friendly & strengthens underlying soil

PolyLevel® does not release harmful chemicals into the soil. On the contrary, PolyLevel® strengthens underlying soil so concrete won’t sink down the road, further protecting your investment.

Cures almost immediately

PolyLevel® takes just minutes to cure, while mud jacking takes hours or days. With PolyLevel® by Sentry Concrete Solutions, you may resume driving, walking, and other use of your concrete almost immediately.

More natural appearance from smaller injection sites

Mud jacking leaves substantial holes in concrete, creating an unfinished look that is highly visible on concrete slabs. PolyLevel® needs less than an inch per injection. Maintain the beauty of your pool deck, garage floor or driveway with smaller, less invasive injections.

Advantages of PolyLevel® for commercial use

PolyLevel is a state-of-the-art alternative to mudjacking, re-leveling grout or concrete replacement. The polyurethane foam system offers numerous features and benefits:

Lightweight

Our polyurethane foam weighs approximately 4-6 pounds per cubic foot when installed, in comparison to traditional mortar-based material which weighs 120 pounds per cubic foot.

High Capacity

Lifting action is a result of the expansion of the polymer, allowing for lifting of a much higher load than traditional mudjacking, which relies on hydraulic pressure being contained under a slab.

Accurate lift

Calculated reaction time of the expanding polyurethane foam allows for targeted, precise lifting of the slab.

Waterproof

Polyurethane formula is fully waterproof, so it won’t wash out, won’t be impacted by freeze/thaw cycles and can be used to under-seal slabs and stop a variety of infrastructure leaks.

Non-invasive

PolyLevel equipment can be used in extremely limited access areas and won’t disturb lawn or landscape.

Quick cure time

Within just 15 minutes after injection, the concrete slab is ready for heavy loading; compared to conventional mudjacking which takes several days to cure.

Environmentally-friendly

With PolyLevel there’s no need to demolish the concrete and transport the waste to a landfill.
